Robert Tytan Myles M.D., F.A. A.O.S.
Fellowship Trained Spinal Surgeon
Board certified by AAOS

Dr. Myles specializes in minimally invasive cervical and lumbar spinal surgery, artificial disc replacement, and adult scoliosis.

Upon graduation, Tulane University in New Orleans awarded Dr. Myles a general surgery internship and four-year orthopedic residency. In 1992, he was named Tulane General Surgery Intern of the Year. Many people would be overwhelmed by the number of activities he was involved in during medical school. However, Dr. Myles says it is the discipline martial arts taught him that enables him to excel in so many different areas of life.

He began learning karate as a child and is now a fifth-degree black belt in shotokan karate and a third degree black belt in tae kwon do. During medical school he was a member of the USA Karate Team, a silver medalist at the 1990 Goodwill exchange games, AAU Western Regional Karate Champion and the United States National Heavy Weight Fighting Champion. Due to the physical risk involved in karate tournaments, Dr. Myles no longer competes. He now uses his talent to train karate students in Arlington, Texas.

Dr. Myles is currently the Vice President of the Orthopedic Institute of Texas established in 1976. He joined the orthopedic group in 1997 after completing his spine fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

In his practice Dr. Myles sees patients with a wide variety of orthopedic problems. His main focus is devoted to the advancement of diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders using minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Minimally invasive spinal surgery is a new field in spinal surgery where a surgeon can perform technically demanding procedures through very small incisions. These techniques significantly decrease blood loss, muscle damage, pain and recovery time when compared to the standard open procedure. There are very few surgeons who can skillfully perform these types of technically demanding procedures. Dr. Myles is one of the leaders of development of minimally invasive surgery and has developed a minimally invasive spinal surgery system that allows a surgeon to surgically treat spinal disorders through incisions less than an inch in length. Dr. Myles is dedicated to the caring treatment of patients and plans to continue researching spinal disorders and development of new surgical techniques. His research findings are published in various medical journals including Spine .
